6) Braves P John Smoltz tied his own modern day 9 inning team record with 15 SO in a game.
Smoltz had done it in 2002. Warren Spahn holds the record with 18 SO in 15 inning games, while Charlie Buffington struck out 17 in a 9 inning game in 1884.
After 3.25 ERA/8 RSAA and 1.12 ERA/22 RSAA seasons, Smoltz had a 2.76 ERA/14 RSAA in 73 games. He has a 3.29 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.01, and 236 RSAA in 604 games.
Smoltz also became the 11th NL pitcher to reach 500 career SO above the league average (since 1900)–

1) Cubs 2B Todd Walker suffered a knee injury while Brewers LF Carlos Lee was breaking up a doubleplay. He was taken to the hospital for a MRI and the team fears he has torn ligaments and his season is over.
After 2 RCAA/.785 OPS and -7 RCAA/.760 OPS seasons, Walker hit .468 SLG, .352 OBA, .820 OPS, 5 RCAA in 129 games. He has a .785 career OPS, compared to his league average of .775, and -25 RCAA in 1028 games.
2) Yankees P Carl Pavano had to leave yesterday’s game, after being hit in the head by a line drive. A CT scan was negative.
After 5.16 ERA/-17 RSAA and 4.30 ERA/-7 RSAA seasons, Pavano had a 3.00 ERA/27 RSAA in 31 starts with the Marlins. He has a 4.21 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.33, and -3 RSAA in 169 games.
3) The Angels placed P Bret Prinz on the 15 day DL and called up P Chris Bootcheck.
Prinz strained the back of his shoulder. He has a 4.77 ERA/-2 RSAA in 98 career games, including a 5.08 ERA/-2 RSAA in 26 games with the 2004 Yankees.
Bootcheck had a 9.58 ERA/-6 RSAA in 4 games in 2003.
4) The BlueJays activated P Ted Lilly from the DL and sent OF Greg Gross to the minors.
After 3.69 ERA/8 RSAA and 4.34 ERA/-2 RSAA seasons, Lilly had a 4.06 ERA/19 RSAA in 32 starts. He has a 4.46 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.55, and 8 RSAA in 129 games.
After starting his career with a .310 SLG, .311 OBA, .621 OPS, -8 RCAA in 44 games, Gross is 0 for 6, with -1 RCAA, in his first 4 games.
5) Dodgers P Derek Lowe had to leave yesterday’s game, after being hit in the arm by a line drive. X-rays showed no fracture.
After 2.58 ERA/44 RSAA and 4.47 ERA/6 RSAA seasons, Lowe had a 5.42 ERA/-10 RSAA in 33 starts with the Redsox. He has a 3.82 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.62, and 103 RSAA in 405 games.
6) The Dodgers placed INF Antonio Perez on the 15 day DL and called up INF Norihiro Nakamura.
Perez has a strained left hamstring. He has -2 RCAA/.655 OPS in 73 career games.
7) The Diamondbacks signed P Darren Oliver to a minor league contract.
Oliver has a 5.07 ERA/-48 RSAA in 306 career games, including a 5.94 ERA/-14 RSAA in 27 games (10 starts) with the 2004 Marlins and Astros.
8) Dodgers CF Milton Bradley was out of yesterday’s lineup, due to soreness after making a diving catch on Saturday.
After -9 RCAA/.723 OPS and 34 RCAA/.923 OPS seasons, Bradley hit .424 SLG, .362 OBA, .786 OPS, 3 RCAA in 141 games. He has a .741 career OPS, compared to his league average of .773, and -6 RCAA in 488 games.
9) Diamondbacks CF Jose Cruz Jr. was scratched from yesterday’s lineup, due to a sore back.
After 0 RCAA/.754 OPS and 1 RCAA/.779 OPS seasons, Cruz hit .433 SLG, .333 OBA, .766 OPS, 2 RCAA in 153 games with the Devil Rays. He has a .792 career OPS, compared to his league average of .774, and 21 RCAA in 1063 games.
10) Phillies CF Kenny Lofton had to leave yesterday’s game, due to tightness in his hamstring.
After 9 RCAA/.763 OPS and 12 RCAA/.801 OPS seasons, Lofton hit .395 SLG, .346 OBA, .741 OPS, 1 RCAA in 83 games with the Yankees. He has a .797 career OPS, compared to his league average of .768, and 208 RCAA in 1734 games.
