Standings
The graphics next to each team are called “sparklines.” They depict each team’s performance over the last month. Each “up” bar is a victory and a “down” bar is a loss. There are horizontal lines for home games and gray bars represent games decided by two runs or less. “PWins” is short for Projected Wins, based on each team’s Run Differential, and is often a better measure of a team’s true strength. Other team graphs and stats can be found on our Team Page.

Game of the Day
The Minnesota Twins won their eighth straight game by beating the Indians 14-6. It was the third time the Twins have won at least eight games in a row, and they are now just three games behind the White Sox in the AL Central and wildcard race.

Player News
Player news items are provided by CBS SportsLine.com.
Shea Hillenbrand was traded to the San Francisco Giants along with relief pitcher Vinnie Chulk late on Friday night for relief pitcher Jeremy Accardo.
Jose Valentin hit a grand slam for the Mets. That was the Mets’ fourth grand slam in their last five games — Cliff Floyd and Carlos Beltran each hit grannies on Sunday in Chicago and Beltran had another on Tuesday in Cincinnati. According to Elias, the Mets are the first team in major league history to hit four grand slams in a five-game span.
Mark Prior (oblique) was activated from the 15-day disbled list on Friday and he started at Washington. He lasted just 3 1/3 innings, allowing four earned runs, four hits and three walks. He did not figure into the decision.
Alex Rodriguez, who turns 31 in six days, recorded the 2,000th hit of his major league career. A-Rod is the eighth player in major league history to reach 2,000 hits before turning 31. A-Rod’s 2,000th hit was also his 450th home run. He’s the first player in major league history to get to 450 home runs before his 31st birthday. The previous youngest player at that milestone was Ken Griffey Jr., who was 31 years, 261 days old when he got there in 2001. (Source: Elias)
Mike Piazza also had the 2,000th hit of his career, a second-inning double. It was the second time this year that two players reached 2,000 hits on the same day. Garret Anderson and Manny Ramirez did it on July 1. Before that, it had not happened since Pete Rose and Willie Davis reached that milestone on June 19, 1973.
Barry Bonds left Friday’s game against the Padres in the bottom of the third inning. He was hit by a pitch on the left kneecap in the bottom of the first inning, but stayed in the game. He then had trouble running to first following a leadoff single in the third.
John Maine, told at 5pm that he would start Friday’s game against Houston in place of Orlando Hernandez, allowed just four hits and a walk in a complete game shutout. “How about that, huh?” manager Willie Randolph said. “Johnny Maine threw the ball great. He did an outstanding job. He kept hitting his spots and putting up zeroes. He was strong and stayed in his rythym.”
C.C. Sabathia did not enjoy pitching on his 26th birthday on Friday night against the Twins. He allowed eight runs — three earned — and six hits in just 3 2/3 innings to take the loss and fall to 7-6. He also walked four batters and struck out just four.
Mark Buehrle allowed five earned runs and seven hits in seven innings on Friday against the Rangers. It was only the second time in his career that he’s lost four in a row.
Pete Walker (shoulder) has elected to have season-ending surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff in his right shoulder, according to the Toronto Star.
The Detroit Tigers optioned Ramon Santiago to Triple-A Toledo on Friday, as they made room for Dmitri Young on the active roster.
Ryan Theriot was optioned to Triple-A Iowa on Friday.
The San Diego Padres optioned Brian Sweeney and Mike Thompson to Triple-A Portland, recalled Terrmel Sledge and purchased the contract of Justin Leone.
The Boston Red Sox will recall Kason Gabbard from Triple-A Pawtucket to start Saturday’s game against the Seattle Mariners in his major league debut.
The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports that J.J. Hardy’s surgery on his ankle tendon was successful Thursday.
The Baltimore Orioles purchased the contract of third baseman Fernando Tatis from Triple-A Ottawa. To make room for Tatis, the Orioles outrighted utility player Howie Clark to Ottawa. Baltimore also recalled pitcher Hayden Penn (appendix) from his rehab assignment and optioned him to Ottawa.
The Houston Astros optioned left-hander Wandy Rodriguez to Triple-A Round Rock on Thursday and called up right-hander Matt Albers from Double-A. Albers was 10-2 with a 2.17 ERA in 19 starts for Corpus Christi.
The Angels’ Kelvim Escobar (shoulder irritation) is expected to come off of the 15-day disabled list on Saturday to start at Kansas City.
THT Stats
Here’s a list of the major league leaders in baserunner pickoffs. I’ve also thrown in stolen base stats so you can see each pitcher’s total baserunning picture. Most of the leaders are lefties, though Detroit’s Justin Verlander stands out as a righthanded pitcher who does a great job controlling the running game.
