Standings
The graphics next to each team are called “sparklines.” They depict each team’s performance over the last month. Each “up” bar is a victory and a “down” bar is a loss. There are horizontal lines for home games and red bars represent games decided by two runs or less. “PWins” is short for Projected Wins, based on each team’s Run Differential, and is often a better measure of a team’s true strength. Other team graphs and stats can be found on our Team Page.

Game of the Day
The Padres solidified their hold on first place and the Dodgers sank further into last in the mercurial NL West as the Pads won in 11 innings, 7-6. Josh Bard had the game-winning hit with two out in the 11th and Mike Cameron had a three-run homer for San Diego. Andre Ethier was 4 for 5 with two home runs. He is the third Dodger rookie with a multi-HR game this year (Matt Kemp and Cody Ross are the others).
It was San Diego’s second consecutive extra-inning win after four straight losses. The Dodgers have lost six in a row and 11 of their last 12.

Player News

The White Sox acquired right-handed reliever Mike MacDougal from the Royals on Monday for minor league pitchers Tyler Lumsden and Daniel Cortes. An All-Star in 2003, MacDougal was activated from the DL on July 13 after straining his right shoulder during spring training.
Sean Tracey was optioned to Triple-A Charlotte on Monday night to make room for MacDougal.
The Milwaukee Brewers activated Ben Sheets (shoulder) from the 15-day disabled list and optioned Dana Eveland to Triple-A Nashville after Monday’s game.
The Tigers scored five runs in the first inning after scoring six in the first inning on Sunday and five in the first on Saturday. The Tigers are only the third team in major league history — and the first in 115 years — to score at least five runs in the first inning in each of three consecutive games. St. Louis of the American Association (then a major league) did it in June 1891 and Pittsburgh did it in September 1887. (Source: Elias)
With a win over the White Sox Monday, the Twins are 32-8 over their last 40 games — almost one-quarter of the season. Through June 7, the Twins were 25-33, 11½ games behind the Tigers. However, while the Twins have played .800 ball over the last six weeks, the Tigers have gone 30-10. The only other major league team even playing above .600 since then is the Red Sox (27-15). Before this stretch, the Twins franchise had won 32 of 40 games once in its history, in May and June of 1931 when the team, then in Washington, had such a stretch under manager Walter Johnson. (Source: Elias)
Remember when the Angels weren’t scoring runs earlier this year? In 20 games in July, the Halos have scored 119 runs, 5.95 per game, tying them with the Indians for the highest average in the American League in July. Two N.L. teams have higher averages: the Braves (8.33) and the Mets (6.15). (Elias)
Jeff Francis threw a two-hitter for his first shutout and the Colorado Rockies slowed down the St. Louis Cardinals with a 7-0 victory Monday night. Francis (8-8) took a perfect game into the sixth, when catcher Yadier Molina blooped a single into shallow right-center just out of the reach of diving center fielder Cory Sullivan, who got his glove on the ball only to watch it scoot underneath him. Francis retired his first 15 batters, only a couple of whom came close to reaching base.
Rookie Cole Hamels struck out a career-high 12 in 5 1/3 innings in a strang outing on Monday against Atlanta. Hamels (2-5) was masterful through five innings but labored in the sixth en route to his fifth loss in his last six decisions. Opponents are hitting .198 against Hamels during his first pass through the batting order, .266 in his second pass and .360 after that.
Nationals outfielder Jose Guillen will have season-ending surgery Tuesday for a completely torn ligament in his right elbow. The Tommy John surgery will be performed by Dr. James Andrews, who examined Guillen in Birmingham, Ala., on Monday. An MRI exam revealed the full tear. “He could not go forward without having this operation,” Nationals GM Jim Bowden said. “It can be as early as eight months, it can be as late as a year and a half.”
The Cleveland Indians purchased the contract of reliever Tom Mastny from Triple-A Buffalo on Monday and optioned right-hander Edward Mujica back to the Bisons.
The Cubs placed first baseman Derrek Lee on the 15-day DL with post-traumatic inflammation of his right wrist. In a corresponding roster move, Chicago has recalled infielder Ryan Theriot from Triple-A Iowa. “I don’t think I was ever really able to take a full good swing so the best thing to do is sit down and let it heal the way it’s supposed to and look at it a couple weeks from now,” Lee said. “He has not regressed,” trainer Mark O’Neal said. “He hasn’t gone backwards but it’s pretty obvious that he’s not swinging the bat the way that Derrek’s capable of swinging.” O’Neal said the team will discuss whether Lee needs a rehabilitation stint in the minors after he rests the wrist.
The Blue Jays are the most likely destination for Julio Lugo, especially since they have young pitchers (such as hard-throwing relievers Brandon League and Francisco Rosario and swing men Shaun Marcum and Dustin McGowan) to offer and have space in the budget after trading Shea Hillenbrand.
The Nationals activated UTL Damian Jackson from the 15-day DL.
Dodgers activated OF Jason Repko from the 60-day DL.
Justin Leone was optioned to Triple-A Portland on Monday to make room for newly-acquired Scott Williamson on the active roster.
Kendry Morales was optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake after Monday’s game at Tampa Bay and the club purchased the contract of veteran Curtis Pride.
The New York Post reports that the Yankees made an offer to the Phillies for Bobby Abreu, but it was rejected instantly because top prospect Philip Hughes wasn’t included in the package.
OF Ichiro Suzuki’s first-inning single tied him with Wade Boggs for most hits over six-year span. Ichiro now has 1,274 hits, the same number Boggs had from 1983-88.
