Ervin Santana (elbow) and John Lackey (forearm) may be back pitching for the Angels in two weeks time.
In extended spring training games, Santana threw about 45 pitches through three innings Wednesday while Lackey did the same Thursday and both reported no ill effects afterward. They could be ready after two more rehab starts each, putting their return to the lineup at mid May. Both will have their pitch counts extended to 60 pitches when they are moved to Triple-A Salt Lake early next week. If they both require a third minor league start, their return would be some time around Memorial Day.
The Red Sox shut down John Smoltz’s rehab Thursday.
He will rejoin the team in Atlanta in order to rehabilitate his surgically repaired shoulder under the eye of the team’s medical personnel. The team doesn’t want Smoltz to pitch in a minor league before he’s truly ready, as they fear he may not hold back in game conditions. The Sox said that Smoltz isn’t injured and is still on course to return in early June.
John Buck tripled twice, doubled and drove in five runs as the Royals beat the Blue Jays 8-6 on Thursday.
One doesn’t see a catcher triple twice very often. Buck had just three career triples, all of them coming in different seasons. He’s now hitting .300 with three homers, 15 RBI and five walks in 40 at-bats this season. Miguel Olivo, who was foolishly promised the starting job in the offseason, is batting .178 with four RBI and one walk in 45 at-bats.

The graphics next to each team are called “sparklines.” They depict each team’s performance over the last month. Each “up” bar is a victory and a “down” bar is a loss. There are horizontal lines for home games and red bars represent games decided by two runs or less. “PWins” is short for Projected Wins, based on each team’s Run Differential, and is often a better measure of a team’s true strength. Other team graphs and stats can be found on our Team Page.
