Standings
The graphics next to each team are called “sparklines.” They depict each team’s performance over the last month. Each “up” bar is a victory and a “down” bar is a loss. There are horizontal lines for home games and red bars represent games decided by two runs or less. “PWins” is short for Projected Wins, based on each team’s Run Differential, and is often a better measure of a team’s true strength. Other team graphs and stats can be found on our Team Page.

Game of the Day
The Rockies, trailing 5-0 at one point, climbed back into the game, scored two in the ninth to tie and one in the tenth to beat San Diego, 9-8. Jamey Carroll singled home the game-winning run in the bottom of the 10th, one inning after Yorvit Torrealba had tied the game with a two-out, two-run homer off Trevor Hoffman. Josh Barfield hit two homers and drove in a career-high four runs for the Padres. The rookie second baseman was 2-for-5 in his first multi-homer game.
It was only the fourth win in the last 17 games for the Rockies. They haven’t been winning the nailbiters lately; this was only their second win in their last twelve close games (games decided by two runs or less).

Chase Utley extended his hitting streak to 27 games against Arizona. Utley hit a soft liner to center leading off the fifth inning against Diamondbacks starter Claudio Vargas to extend the longest hitting streak in the major leagues this season and equal the third-longest streak in team history.
Royals DH Mike Sweeney, who has missed 77 games with a bulging disk, went 1-for-7 with a home run, a walk and two strikeouts in two rehab games with Class-A Burlington in the Midwest League. Sweeney was off Thursday and will join the Double-A Wichita on Friday.
Fernando Tatis, starting in the major leagues for the first time since June 13, 2003, had two hits, drove in a run and scored two runs to lead the Baltimore Orioles to a 6-4 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Thursday night. Tatis, who was released by Tampa Bay in spring training in 2004 and did not play professional baseball the past two seasons, doubled in the seventh and scored on a fielding error by third baseman Mark Teahen.
The Mariners placed Chris Snelling on the 15-day disabled list with an injured left shoulder. The 24-year-old outfielder was recalled from Triple-A Tacoma before Wednesday’s game against Toronto and did not play. Team officials said Snelling was to be optioned back to the Rainiers following the game. Instead, he landed on the DL.
Josh Bard, a career .238 hitter through 2005, leads the Padres with a .368 average. “He’s hit for us from Day 1 since we got him from Boston,” manager Bruce Bochy said. “The opportunity has been there and he’s made the most of it.”
Carlos Lee will likely be traded after rejecting a four-year, $48 million contract proposal from the Brewers, according to FOXSports.com’s Ken Rosenthal.
The Blue Jays have decided to bring back Alex Rios (leg) for Friday’s game against the Athletics. The Jays sent outfielder Chad Mottola outright to Triple-A Syracuse.
The A’s placed LHP Scott Sauerbeck on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 26, with a strained right groin and recalled LHP Ron Flores from Triple-A Sacramento.
Brian Moehler is set to come off the DL Sunday, but the Marlins haven’t decided whether he will pitch the first or second game of a split doubleheader at Philadelphia. Moehler has been on the DL since July 2 with a sprained right foot.
Esteban Yan, who has pitched 11 years in the major leagues, signed a minor league contract with the Kansas City Royals on Thursday, and was assigned to Triple-A Omaha in the Pacific Coast League. Yan was designated for assignment by Cincinnati on July 14, after going 1-0 with a 3.60 ERA in 14 games. He also pitched for the Los Angeles Angels this season, going a combined 1-0 with one save and a 5.54 ERA in 27 appearances.
The Twins agreed to terms with C Mike Redmond on a two-year contract extension with a club option for 2009.
