The graphics next to each team are called “sparklines.” They depict each team’s performance over the last month. Each “up” bar is a victory and a “down” bar is a loss. There are horizontal lines for home games and red bars represent games decided by two runs or less. “PWins” is short for Projected Wins, based on each team’s Run Differential, and is often a better measure of a team’s true strength. Other team graphs and stats can be found on our Team Page.

Game of the Day
Big Papi couldn’t win the close game this time. Tampa Bay beat the Red Sox, 7-6 in ten innings. The Devil Rays won on Greg Norton’s 10th inning home run, after they had scored four runs in the 7th and 8th innings to tie the game. Tampa Bay has beaten the Sox in 7 of 10 games at home this year.
Jonathan Papelbon entered in the eighth but couldn’t hold the lead as he gave up a home run to Dioner Navarro. His ERA rose from 0.49 ERA all the way to 0.64. David Ortiz hit his 40th home run of the season and increased his RBI total to 109. According to Elias, it’s the first time in 45 years that an American League player has reached 40 home runs and 100 RBI within his team’s first 110 games of the season. In 1961, both Roger Maris (in the Yankees’ 106th game) and Mickey Mantle (109th game) did that.

The Dodgers have now won nine consecutive games, a streak that began after they lost eight straight. They are the sixth team in major-league history to lose at least eight straight games and follow that immediately with a winning streak of at least eight games. The others: the 1931 Cubs, 1949 Red Sox, 1965 Pirates, 1985 Twins and 2001 Cubs. (Source: Elias)
David Wright became the latest young player on the Mets to get a long-term six-year contract extension Sunday. “It’s been an exciting week for us,” general manager Omar Minaya said. “To reach agreements with both Jose (Reyes) and David means the left side of our infield is secure for the next several years. At the age of 23, David Wright has developed into one of the most complete players in the National League.”
John Maine tossed six scoreless innings in Sunday’s start at Phillies. He allowed three hits and three walks while striking out four in the win (2-3). “He did a great job (Sunday night) going after hitters,” manager Willie Randolph said. “He’s trusting his stuff and that’s why he’s been successful.” Jose Reyes hit the Mets’ eighth grand slam of the season — matching a franchise record — to cap a seven-run fourth inning in Sunday’s game at Philadelphia.
Stephen Drew was 2-for-3 with a double in Sunday’s game against the Astros. He also made a spectacular play to rob Pettitte of a hit in the sixth. The rookie shortstop made a diving stop to his left, then threw the runner out from his knees.
Frank Thomas was 3-for-5 with a home run (24) and four RBI (67) in Sunday’s game at Seattle, as he improved his average to .259. “I’m healthy again,” said Thomas. “I had a major injury and I’m ready to go back to where I am, one of the top players in the game. I know what I’ve been able to bring to the table day in and day out when I’m healthy.”
Vladimir Guerrero belted his 23rd home run and he drove in three RBI in Sunday’s game against the Rangers, a day after his 44-game hitting streak against the Rangers came to an end. He had a hit in every game he had ever played against Texas before going 0-for-1 on Saturday.
Brian Giles was too much for the Washington Nationals on Sunday. Giles hit a two-run homer and singled home Dave Roberts in the 10th inning, lifting the San Diego Padres to a 3-2 victory. “That was a good win,” Giles said. “Obviously you don’t want to leave home after a six-game homestand with a losing record.” Dave Roberts had three hits for the second straight game on Sunday against the Nationals. He also stole two bases in the game.
Howie Kendrick singled in the Angels’ fifth inning on Sunday against the Rangers to extend his hitting streak to 16 games, the longest by any rookie this season.
Jason Tyner was 4-for-5 with two runs scored in Sunday’s series finale at Kansas City to raise his batting average to .326. He was playing center field in place of Torii Hunter (sore left ankle), who was limited to designated hitter.
Michael Cuddyer was 3-for-4 with two doubles (27), home run (16) and two RBI (70) in Sunday’s game at Kansas City.
Fans booed after Toronto fell behind 3-0 Sunday, but the Blue Jays rallied with a four-run fourth inning. Vernon Wells doubled in a run and scored on Alex Rios’ double. Rios went 2-for-4 to raise his average to .321.
Jim Thome went 2-for-3 for the White Sox on Sunday, who finished 6-3 on their road trip.
Matt Cain had a career-high 12 strikeouts in seven strong innings, and the San Francisco Giants avoided a historic home sweep with a 6-2 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Sunday. The 21-year-old rookie right-hander baffled the Rockies with power and deception during his third 10-strikeout game of the season.
Chris Capuano gave up four runs and seven hits in six innings in a loss on Sunday at St. Louis, and is 0-4 in five starts since beating the Chicago Cubs on July 6. Capuano fell to 4-2 against the Cardinals overall and 3-1 in St. Louis.
Juan Encarnacion hit a three-run homer, helping the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Milwaukee Brewers 7-1 on Sunday. Encarnacion hit his 16th homer with one out in the sixth for a 4-0 lead, his first homer since July 27.
Rafael Furcal extended his hitting streak to 13 games by bunting for a hit Sunday, then stole second.
Jaret Wright allowed one run, five hits and four walks in six innings Sunday at Baltimore, winning for the fourth time in five decisions. The right-hander didn’t retire the side in order until the sixth, but was good enough to provide New York with its 10th win in 12 games. Jason Giambi went 3-for-3 Sunday with a solo home run. He has three homers in his last seven games.
Wilfredo Ledezma couldn’t have done much better in place of Justin Verlander. Ledezma struck out five in 5 2/3 innings as the Detroit Tigers took advantage of an error by C.C. Sabathia to beat the Cleveland Indians 1-0 Sunday and complete a three-game sweep. Making his first major league start since June 4, 2005, Ledezma (2-1) allowed six hits and two walks.
Rich Hill had a career-high nine strikeouts in seven sharp innings to lead the Chicago Cubs over the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-1 Sunday. Hill (2-5) yielded one run and five hits with one walk in his 11th career start, carrying over his success from Tuesday night when he beat the Arizona Diamondbacks for his first career major league win.
Mark Mulder (shoulder) was able to begin a rehab assignment on Sunday for the Class A Swing of the Quad Cities. He worked five innings, allowing two runs — one earned — and two hits while striking out one in the no-decision.
Gary Majewski was beat up for four runs in 1 1/3 innings Sunday vs. the Atlanta Braves, dropping his record to 4-4 on the season.
Edgar Renteria singled in the first inning and then Andruw Jones hit a home run, giving the Braves a 2-0 lead in their 6-4 win at Cincinnati. Renteria is batting .430 in the first inning this season, the highest such average in the major leagues, and Jones has 28 RBI in the first inning, the most for any player in the majors. Jones went 3-for-4 Sunday with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored.
The Devil Rays activated reliever Dan Miceli (shoulder) from the 60-day DL on Sunday. Miceli had been on the DL since May 5. He made four minor league rehab appearances at Double-A Montgomery, throwing five scoreless innings in four games. Miceli was the Devil Rays’ closer before he went down, so he could push Brian Meadows and Seth McClung in that role down the stretch.
The Mets’ Brian Bannister (hamstring) was abused in his Triple-A rehab start Saturday, while Mike Pelfrey will go Sunday in his Triple-A debut.
The Astros’ No. 5 starter’s spot comes back up Saturday, Aug. 12, and there have been strong indications phenom Jason Hirsh could be the man for that spot. Also, Fernando Nieve is back up with the Astros in relief, but there is talk his starting days are over. He could be groomed as a late-inning reliever now, perhaps a future closer, according to MLB.com.
Justin Verlander (arm fatigue) is expected to return to the rotation Saturday, Aug. 12 at the Chicago White Sox (Mark Buehrle). Also, rookie Zach Miner could be bumped back Sunday, Aug. 13 in that series because veteran Nate Robertson would be able to go on regular rest for an important intradivision matchup.
The Diamondbacks designated left-hander Randy Choate for assignment and optioned right-handed Dustin Nippert to Triple-A Tucson on Sunday. They recalled reliever Jeff Bajaneru and infielder Alberto Callaspo from their top farm club. The D-Backs have 10 days to trade, release or outright Choate to the minor leagues.
Kip Wells was sent back to Texas to see team physician Dr. Keith Meister about the soreness in his pitching shoulder that forced him out of his previous start. Edinson Volquez will be called up from Triple-A Oklahoma to fill in for Wells on Monday in Oakland.
The White Sox have a decision to make on Dustin Hermanson (back), whose rehab assignment period has expired. They reportedly are not ready to bring him off the DL, so they might have to reassign him to the DL.
Marlins troubled pitching prospect Jeff Allison, who has been on suspension since spring training, was recently cited for driving 70 mph in a 55-mph zone on Interstate 85 in Greensboro, N.C., and for not having his driver’s license with him. The 21-year-old Allison, the 16th overall pick in the 2003 draft, missed the entire 2004 season while battling drug abuse. Last year, Allison went 5-4 with a 4.18 ERA in 17 starts for theClass A Greensboro Grasshoppers.
