Standings
The graphics next to each team are called “sparklines.” They depict each team’s performance over the last month. Each “up” bar is a victory and a “down” bar is a loss. There are horizontal lines for home games and red bars represent games decided by two runs or less. “PWins” is short for Projected Wins, based on each team’s Run Differential, and is often a better measure of a team’s true strength. Other team graphs and stats can be found on our Team Page.

Game of the Day
The Dodgers beat the Reds 7-6 in 16 innings last night to drop Cincinnati out of the wildcard lead for the first time since June 13. The game lasted almost five hours.
Both bullpens did a great job, pitching the equivalent of two shutouts between the 7th and 16th innings. Regular starter Derek Lowe pitched the final three games for the win. Ramon Martinez hit a home run off Ryan Franklin’s first pitch in the 16th to win it for LA.

Player News

Barry Bonds hit two home runs in Tuesday’s game at Atlanta. It was the first time he has gone deep twice in a game since 2004. He saved another one from going out of the park with his glove Tuesday night.
Andruw Jones had a pair of home runs in Tuesday’s game against the Giants, giving him 1,000 RBI in his career. He stumbled on his way to first, pulled himself up with a smile and finished off his trot around the bases. “I thought it was going foul, so I kind of stutter-stepped, my spikes got caught in the grass and I fell down,” he said. “It’s not the first time I’ve fallen.”
Delmon Young went 2-for-3 in his major league debut on Tuesday night at Chicago White Sox, two months after serving a 50-game suspension in the minors for throwing his bat at an umpire. He got hit on his right shoulder during his first at-bat and hit a two-run homer during his third plate appearance.
Travis Hafner hit his 40th homer in Tuesday’s game against the Blue Jays with two outs in the first inning. The 423-foot shot to left-center made him the seventh player in Indians history to reach the milestone and first since Jim Thome hit a team-record 52 homers in 2002.
With one out in the eighth inning in Tuesday’s game against the Angels, Seattle’s Rafael Soriano was hit behind the right ear by Vladimir Guerrero’s line drive. The sound of the ball connecting with Soriano’s head was audible throughout the stadium, and the reliever immediately crumpled to the ground as the ball landed near the Angels’ dugout on the third-base side. Soriano was attended to by the Mariners’ training staff and medics for several minutes before being put on a backboard and carted off the field.
According to published reports, Manny Ramirez (knee) has been returned to Boston for further examination after missing the past three games. The club is also missing David Ortiz (illness) and Wily Mo Peña (wrist), who joined him in returning to Boston early.
According to Elias, all of Philadelphia’s last 32 games are against teams with records currently below the .500 mark. The longest such streak in NL history was 26 games in 1973 by the Pittsburgh Pirates, who failed to take advantage by posting a 13-13 mark during that stretch. The only streak of more than 30 games was recorded by the White Sox in 1983. Chicago played sub-.500 teams in each of their last 36 games, going 29-7 to pull away from their AL West opponents and win the division by 20 games.
Jarrod Washburn (8-12) pitched six strong innings on Tuesday against the Angels, but ran into trouble in the seventh when he allowed consecutive homers to Garret Anderson and Robb Quinlan. Washburn escaped the inning without further damage and won consecutive decisions for the first time this season.
Jered Weaver (9-2) gave up five runs and nine hits in just 4 2/3 innings on Tuesday at Seattle. The rookie tied an AL record by winning his first nine career decisions — including a pair of impressive wins over the Mariners — but has now dropped two straight.
Oakland’s Kirk Saarloos, who allowed six hits and one run, struck out three and walked two in Tuesday’s start against Boston, improved to 7-6 to win his fourth straight win.
Chris Young, who skipped his last start after straining his right shoulder against Arizona on Aug. 20, gave up two runs — one earned — to lower his NL-leading road ERA to 2.51 in Tuesday’s start at Arizona. He struck out 11, walked nine and hit a batter. The three hits were the only balls to reach the outfield against him. “Mechanically I felt good,” Young said. “Everything was in sync. I made my share of mistakes but it was one of those nights where the mistakes were fouled off.”
Carlos Beltran set a career-high with his 39th homer in Tuesday’s game at Colorado. Beltran added a run-scoring double to push his season total to 110 RBI, also a career best. His 24 home runs on the road are a club record.
Roy Oswalt allowed four hits and three runs in Tuesday’s game against the Brewers and struck out seven in seven innings. Despite the quality start, he did not figure into the decision.
Willy Taveras went 0-for-3 in Tuesday’s game against the Brewers, ending his hitting streak at 30 games — the second-longest in the majors this season behind Chase Utley’s 35-game run for the Philadelphia Phillies from June 23 to Aug. 3.
Joe Crede tied a career-high with four hits in Tuesday’s game against the Devil Rays. He also drove in two runs to help the White Sox move one-half game ahead of the Minnesota Twins in the AL wild-card race.
The Marlins bottomed out on May 21 when their record fell to 11-31. Tuesday’s 9-1 victory over the Cardinals was Florida’s ninth straight win, equaling the longest winning streak in major-league history by a team that lost at least 31 of its first 42 games. Amazingly, the Marlins set that record with nine straight wins earlier this season (June 10-20). (Source: Elias)
Scott Olsen earned his 11th victory of the season in the Marlins’ win, the 43rd win by a Marlins rookie this season, surpassing the total of the 1984 Mets. Dwight Gooden (17-9), Ron Darling (12-9) and Sid Fernandez (6-6) were all rookies on that team. The last NL team with a higher total than Florida’s was the 1952 Brooklyn Dodgers (51). (Source: Elias)
Dan Uggla was 3-for-4 with a home run (21), two runs scored and four RBI (79) in Tuesday’s game at St. Louis. Rookie teammate Josh Willingham joined him with his 20th homer.
The Cardinals’ Preston Wilson hit the first leadoff home run of his career in the bottom of the first inning in Tuesday’s game against the Marlins. That was the only offense of the night against Scott Olsen.
Mark Mulder (6-7) lasted only 1 2/3 innings in Tuesday’s game against the Marlins, matching the shortest outing of his career. He gave up five runs on six hits in his second start since returning from a shoulder injury that sidelined him for more than two months.
It was like the good ol’ days at Coors Field. The Mets defeated the Rockies 10-5, ending Colorado’s team-record streak of 39 home games without allowing their opponent to score in double-figures. During one stretch from September 1998 to May 2000, the Rockies didn’t record even a 10-game streak holding their opponents to 10 runs or less in each. (Source: Elias)
Ryan Zimmerman finished 4-for-5 with three RBI in Tuesday’s game against Philadelphia. His 89 RBI are the most among National League rookies.
Ryan Howard tied Philadelphia’s single-season record with his major league-leading 48th home run Tuesday night, helping the Phillies to a 10-6 win over the Washington Nationals.
Team doctors examined Minnesota rookie Francisco Liriano (elbow) on Tuesday and said everything looks good in his rehabilitation. On the 15-day disabled list since Aug. 8 with a strained ligament in his left elbow, Liriano (12-3) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Wednesday in tennis shoes.
Mark Redman tossed a complete game shutout at Minnesota, allowing just five hits and no walks while striking out three. He evened his record at 8-8 and he lowered his ERA to 5.47. In his fourth major league start, Matt Garza allowed five hits and two earned runs in 7 2/3 innings on Tuesday against the Royals, striking out a career-high seven and walking one.
Matt Miller, out since April following elbow surgery, began his Triple-A rehab assignment Tuesday, striking out two in one inning.
Cliff Floyd (Achilles’) went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts in the start of his rehab assignment Tuesday.
C.C. Sabathia (10-8) picked up the win on Tuesday against the Blue Jays. He allowed two runs and four hits as he worked at least seven innings for the 10th time in his last 11 starts since July 7.
