The graphics next to each team are called “sparklines.” They depict each team’s performance over the last month. Each “up” bar is a victory and a “down” bar is a loss. There are horizontal lines for home games and gray bars represent games decided by two runs or less. Other team graphs and stats can be found on our Team Page.

Game of the Day

Houston beat the Cubs on a two-run single by Brad Ausmus in the eighth, 3-2. Carlos Zambrano had a great start for the Cubs and Juan Pierre had four stolen bases, but the bullpen couldn’t hold the lead. The Astros have won eight of their last nine and are now five games out of first place.

Player News

Luis Gonzalez held a press conference before today’s games to respond to an interview with Diamondbacks managing general partner Ken Kendrick, in which he said other Diamondback players have been taking HGH, and specifically mentioned Gonzalez. In a word, Gonzalez was angry.

Yankees pitcher Randy Johnson was suspended five games by the commissioner’s office for intentionally throwing at Cleveland’s Eduardo Perez. Manager Joe Torre was suspended for one game.

The Red Sox and White Sox swapped relievers. Boston, which didn’t have a lefty reliever, acquired one in Javier Lopez, who has been pitching in AAA for the ChiSox. Chicago, which needed another righty relief option, picked up David Riske. Lopez appeared in yesterday’s game with the Red Sox.

A Hardball Times Update
Goodbye for now.

Having handed the starting shortstop job to Jason Bartlett, the Minnesota Twins traded infielder Juan Castro back to the Cincinnati Reds for minor league outfielder Brandon Roberts. The Twins also designated Tony Batista for assignment.

John Wetteland was fired as the Washington Nationals’ bullpen coach, due to philosophical disagreements with manager Frank Robinson.

Placed on the disabled list: Oakland’s Frank Thomas and Cleveland’s Casey Blake.

The Los Angeles Times reports the Angels might be leaning towards keeping Jered Weaver in the rotation and moving his brother Jeff to the bullpen when Bartolo Colon (shoulder) is healthy enough to return. “I’m not an oddsmaker,” pitching coach Bud Black said, “but Jered has shown he deserves to get major league starts in the future.”

Chris Burke has officially taken the Astros’ center field job from Willie Taveras. Burke is hitting .400 (14-for-35) over his last nine games.

Colorado’s Todd Helton had a single, a double and three walks, reaching base in nine straight plate appearances over two games.

The Seattle Mariners have scheduled a Friday news conference to announce they have signed Brandon Morrow, the fifth overall choice in this month’s major league draft.

THT’s Stats
