According to Ed Price of AOL Fanhouse, the Mets are exploring a trade for Indians’ utilityman Mark DeRosa.
The Mets are dealing with injuries all around the infield and DeRosa could provide help at almost any position. He’s batting .255/.322/.427 this season with six home runs and 26 RBI in 157 at-bats, and is owed about $4.15 million for the remainder of 2009.
According to MLB.com’s Mark Sheldon, Joey Votto was diagnosed with an inner ear infection Thursday morning.
Votto underwent multiple tests Wednesday night after missing several games with random bouts of dizziness. Hopefully the Reds can get him on some medication and out to the field shortly. He won’t be in the lineup Thursday.
According to SI.com’s Jon Heyman, the White Sox and Padres have agreed to a trade centered around Jake Peavy.
The White Sox are expected to send four prospects to San Diego, and MLB.com’s Corey Brock is hearing left-handers Clayton Richard and Aaron Poreda will be the center pieces. Peavy has a full no-trade clause in his current contract with San Diego, however, and must first approve the deal. It’s long been assumed that he prefers the National League, but most insider sources seem to think he’ll accept the move. Plenty more details to come.
Bobby Abreu underwent precautionary X-rays on his big toe Wednesday night.
The Angels aren’t expecting anything unusual. Abreu injured his toe in the second inning Wednesday and was replaced by Juan Rivera. The X-ray results should be made available by Thursday afternoon.
Jose Reyes headed to New York for tests on his injured right calf Wednesday night and could wind up on the disabled list.
Reyes initially suffered the calf injury more than a week ago and aggravated it during Wednesday’s game. He may have been rushed back to action to quickly. Ramon Martinez is likely to fill in.
Tigers activated RHP Nate Robertson from the 15-day disabled list.
Robertson will resume his role as a long reliever in the Detroit bullpen. He had a 6.30 ERA, 7/6 K/BB ratio and 1.60 WHIP before he was sidelined.
Justin Upton was 4-for-7 with two three-run homers in a wild extra-inning win over the Marlins on Wednesday night.
The Diamondbacks took the back-and-forth nightcap 11-9 in 13 innings. Upton scored three times and stole a base in the win. He launched his first three-run shot in the third inning to bring the D’Backs to within one run. He later hit a go-ahead three run homer in the top of the 13th to put the D’Backs ahead for good. He has seven homers and 18 RBI this month alone.
In his return from the disabled list, Chris Carpenter moved to 2-0 on the season by holding the Cubs scoreless over five innings on Wednesday night.
He was on the DL since April 15 with a strained oblique muscle. Carpenter looked solid in his return, allowing just three hits while walking four and striking out two. He threw 41 of his 67 pitches for strikes and now has a 15-inning scoreless streak to start the season. Carpenter will get the Brewers in his next assignment.
Omar Infante will go on the DL after suffering a broken bone in his left hand when he was hit by a pitch Wednesday.
He could miss two months. It’d be a bigger loss if the Braves were using Infante correctly and giving him time in the outfield. Since he’s been used strictly in the infield, the Braves won’t lose much by giving his starts to Martin Prado, who now has some extra value. Prado, though, isn’t an option at shortstop, so expect Diory Hernandez to be called up to back up Yunel Escobar.
