Game of the Day
The Padres took a one-and-a-half game lead in the NL West by beating Pittsburgh 2-1. Jake Peavy allowed only one run over eight innings, strikout out 11, but was nearly matched by the Pirates’ Zach Duke, who has a 1.73 ERA in September. Josh Barfield hit the go-ahead home run in the seventh.
And the Padres’ Trevor Hoffman notched his 42nd save of the year and 478th of his career, tying Lee Smith’s all-time save record. Hoffman achieved his career total in 817 appearances; Smith achieved his in 1,022.

Barry Bonds hit his 734th career homer Saturday night against the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park, breaking Hank Aaron’s all-time National League home run record.
Nick Johnson broke his right leg in an outfield collision during the eighth inning of the New York Mets’ 12-6 victory over the Nationals. The first baseman collided with right fielder Austin Kearns while chasing David Wright’s blooper down the right-field line that fell in for a triple. Johnson was immobilized and taken to a hospital. He was scheduled to have surgery Saturday night in New York to repair his right femur, the bone in the upper part of his leg.
Alfonso Soriano has probably tied the record for most home runs for a player who plays only one year for a team. He hit his 46th home run last night, tying Jose Canseco’s “record” set with the Blue Jays in 1989.
Luke Scott hit a two-run home run in the third inning and then the winning three-run blast in the bottom of the ninth to give the Astros a 7-4 win over St. Louis.
Shane Victorino and Chase Utley, hitting second and third, respectively, in the Phillies lineup, each had four hits and three runs scored in the team’s 8-6 win against Florida. According to Elias, it’s the first time this season in the major leagues that teammates — hitting back-to-back in the batting order — each had four or more hits and three or more runs scored in the same game.
The Mets were down 4-0 but rallied to beat Washington 12-6. It was the eighth time this season that the Mets won a game in which they trailed by at least four runs, tying them with Kansas City for the most such comeback victories in the majors in 2006.
For the fifth time in 2006, Carlos Zambrano hit a home run and earned a win for the Cubs. According to Elias, he’s the first major league pitcher in 40 years to have at least five games of that type in one season. Earl Wilson did it five times in 1966; he pitched for both the Red Sox and Tigers that season. The last National League pitcher with five such games in one year was Don Drysdale for the 1965 Dodgers.
The Tigers scored 10 runs in the first inning at Kansas City, as the Royals became only the second team in major league history — and the first since Grover Cleveland was in the White House — to allow 10 or more runs in the first inning twice in one season. Back in 1896, Louisville (then in the National League) allowed a 10-spot to Chicago on April 17 and did the same at Philadelphia on Aug. 19. (Source: Elias)
Carlos Beltran, who hasn’t played since the NL East Division-clinching game on Monday night because of a right quad strain suffered Sunday in Pittsburgh, said on Saturday that he will ask for whatever steps are necessary “to get me back.” Before the Mets played the Nationals on Saturday, Beltran announced his intent to play Sunday. After watching nine more innings, he added this proviso — “if I can.”
Mariano Rivera threw a 17-pitch ninth inning on Friday night for his 34th save of the season. The right-hander, who’d been sidelined since experiencing tenderness around his elbow, notched three punchouts along the way, two of them looking. More importantly, he felt fine afterwards. “I knew right away by how I felt [after the game],” the Yankees closer said. “I feel normal, and it makes me feel great.”
