Standings
The graphics next to each team are called “sparklines.” They depict each team’s performance over the last month. Each “up” bar is a victory and a “down” bar is a loss. There are horizontal lines for home games and red bars represent games decided by two runs or less. “PWins” is short for Projected Wins, based on each team’s Run Differential, and is often a better measure of a team’s true strength. Other team graphs and stats can be found on our Team Page.

Game of the Day
The red-hot A’s dropped their magic number to two with a 5-4 12-inning win over the Angels. The Angels had tied the game in the top of the ninth of Maicer Izturis’s double, but Oakland’s Marco Scutaro drove in Bobby Kielty with a single in the 12th. The A’s have won 8 of their last 9 games, avoiding the September swoon that plagued them the last two years.

Yesterday’s Home Runs
The following stats are provided by Hit Tracker, which logs the projected distance of each home run (if it were to land uninterrupted at field level) and its “standard” distance, which is corrected for weather conditions. You can read their daily updates at the Hit Tracker Blog.
Richie Sexson launched a 125.9 mph rocket at U.S Cellular (his 2nd of the game, in the 3rd inning) that went 445 feet true distance to LF into/across a 15 mph wind blowing in from CF. Sexson’s blast was the 2nd hardest hit home run of 2006, and had the 2nd longest standard distance of the year as well. Under standard conditions (70 degrees, no wind, sea level), it would have carried 488 feet; last night, the wind stole 45 feet of distance, the cool temperature took away another 4 feet, and the altitude on the South Side of Chicago added 6 feet compared to standard conditions.
One more notable homer, L.A. Angel Howie Kendrick bashed a 439 foot homer run, the longest of 2006 hit at McAfee Coliseum.

Player News
Player news items are provided by CBS SportsLine.com.
Chris Young pitched 8 1/3 innings of no-hit ball Friday before Joe Randa hit a pinch-home run in the Padres’ 6-2 victory over the Pirates. No Padres pitcher has thrown a no-hitter, and Young was only the second in the past 30 years to reach the ninth inning without allowing a hit. The other was Andy Ashby in 1997. Steve Arlin did so in 1972, and Clay Kirby pitched eight hitless innings before being removed for a pinch-hitter in 1970.
Chien-Ming Wang recorded his 18th victory in the Yankees’ 4-1 win over the Devil Rays. Wang tied Johan Santana for the major-league lead in victories, and he equaled the all-time single-season mark for pitchers born in Asia. The record was set by Chan Ho Park for the Dodgers in 2000.
Gary Sheffield returned to the Yankees’ lineup as a first baseman, a position that he had never played in his 19 seasons in the majors.
Cole Hamels struck out 10 batters in 6 2/3 innings to earn the victory in the Phillies’ 5-2 win over the Marlins. It was the fourth time this season that Hamels has reached double-figures in stikeouts.
Ryan Zimmerman drove in one of the Nationals’ runs in a 3-2 win over the Mets. It was Zimmerman’s 100th RBI of the season, a mark reached by only two other National League rookies in the past 50 years: Mike Piazza in 1993 (112) and Albert Pujols in 2001 (130).
Craig Biggio’s two-out, game-winning single in the Astros’ 6-5 victory over the Cardinals was the 16th walkoff hit of his career, but his first since the second game of the 2003 season.
Barry Bonds drove in six runs in the Giants’ 13-12 loss to the Brewers. At age 42, Bonds became the oldest player with six or more RBI in one game since 43-year-old Carlton Fisk had six RBI for the White Sox in a 1991 victory over the Twins.
Bonds hit his 733rd career home run, tying the National League record that Hank Aaron has held since 1972. Only three other players have held the mark over the past 75 years: Rogers Hornsby (1929-37), Mel Ott (1937-66) and Willie Mays (1966-72).
The Giants scored four runs in the top of the first inning at Milwaukee, only to allow five in the bottom of the inning. According to Elias, the last time the Giants blew a lead of at least four runs before the end of the first inning was 101 years ago, on June 9, 1905, at Pittsburgh, when they scored five in the top of the first and allowed six in the bottom of the inning. Ironically, the Giants’ pitchers in that game were a pair of Hall of Famers who each allowed three runs in the first: Joe McGinnity and Christy Mathewson.
