The Cardinals beat the Dodgers, 3-2, on Albert Pujols’s league-leading 30th home run in the 14th inning. According to Elias, it’s the fifth time in his career that Pujols has hit a game-ending home run in extra innings. Only three other active players have ever done that at least five times: Jim Thome (6), Barry Bonds (5) and Tim Salmon (5). While Pujols has only been in the major leagues since 2001, the other three all debuted in 1992 or earlier.

Casey Blake, Jhonny Peralta and Travis Hafner homered against Francisco Liriano, leading the Cleveland Indians to a 6-4 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Thursday night.
Mark Teixeira hit a career-high three homers and drove in seven runs, and the Texas Rangers hit six home runs Thursday night in a 15-1 rout of the Baltimore Orioles. Teixeira hit a sacrifice fly in the first inning, a solo homer in the sixth, a two-run shot in the eighth and a three-run drive in the ninth. The seven RBI tied a career high. Teixeira has 12 homers, including four in his last two games. It was his 12th career multihomer game, the first this season.
Nomar Garciaparra of the Dodgers hit a two-run homer in the third to extend his hitting streak to 22 games at St. Louis. It’s the second-longest streak in the majors this year, trailing only Edgar Renteria’s 23-game run in April.
Aubrey Huff, batting fifth and playing third base, hit a three-run home run in his Houston debut and Lance Berkman had three hits to lead the Astros to a 5-1 victory over the Florida Marlins on Thursday night. Huff, who was acquired in a trade with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays on Wednesday, homered to right-center in the eighth off reliever Randy Messenger (1-5) to give the Astros a 5-1 lead. The 30-year-old Huff hit .283 with eight home runs and 28 RBI in 63 games for the Devil Rays this season. The third baseman hit safely in 20 of his last 23 games with Tampa Bay, batting .433 with 13 doubles, five homers and 16 RBI during the stretch.
The Nationals acquired outfielder Austin Kearns, shortstop Felipe Lopez and right-handed pitcher Ryan Wagner from the Reds in exchange for right-handed pitcher Gary Majewski, left-handed pitcher Bill Bray, infielder Brendan Harris, shortstop Royce Clayton and right-handed pitcher Daryl Thompson.
The eight-player deal that sent RF Austin Kearns to Washington represents an opportunity for Chris Denorfia, who was called up from Triple-A Louisville to fill the roster spot. Denorfia will get a chance to be the primary right fielder. “It’s his time,” GM Wayne Krivsky said. “We think he’s ready.”
The Athletics activated OF Milton Bradley from the 15-day DL and optioned 1B Dan Johnson to Triple-A Sacramento of the PCL.
The New York Post reports that both New York teams are checking into the availability of Phillies outfielder Bobby Abreu. Apparently, if the Phillies don’t get back into the playoff race in the next two weeks, they’ll begin to trade off some veterans.
Padres reliever Doug Brocail was activated from the disabled list, a little over four months after undergoing the first of two heart angioplasties during the spring.
The Houston Astros placed third baseman Morgan Ensberg on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 10, with a bruised right shoulder. Ensberg originally hurt the shoulder on June 9 against the Atlanta Braves and had been laboring with the injury for a month, Astros manager Phil Garner said. Ensberg was hitting .236 with 19 homers and 44 RBI. He has just one homer since June 9. The Astros called up outfielder Luke Scott from Triple-A Round Rock on Thursday.
Larry Bigbie (hernia) began a rehab assignment on Wednesday with Triple-A Memphis and was 1-for-2 with a walk as the DH. This is his second stint on the DL following a stress fracture in his foot in spring training, and the team expects him to take the full 20 days.
Todd Helton leads all active players in hitting after the All-Star break with a .349 career average. He hit .367 last season after the break, best in the NL. This season, Helton was hitting .296 at the break.
Kameron Loe, on the 15-day DL with a bone bruise in his right elbow, allowed one hit and two walks in 2 2-3 innings in a rehab start with Oklahoma on Wednesday.
The Tigers changed their pitching rotation. LHP Kenny Rogers, who started the All-Star game on Tuesday, will pitch Friday, RHP Justin Verlander on Saturday, RHP Zach Miner on Sunday and LHP Nate Robertson is scheduled for Tuesday. The original rotation had Miner going Friday, Robertson on Saturday and Verlander on Sunday.
The Boston Red Sox purchased left-hander Craig Breslow’s contract from Triple-A Pawtucket on Thursday. Left-hander Lenny DiNardo was moved from the 15- to 60-day disabled list to make room on the 40-man roster for Breslow. Righty Jason Johnson was optioned to the minors earlier in the week, opening a spot for Breslow.
The Royals optioned right-hander Joe Nelson to Triple-A Omaha on Wednesday.
Robinson Cano, who has been out since June 25 with a hamstring strain, might be able to return to the lineup by Sunday or Monday, according to the New York Times.
Sidney Ponson is about to get another chance, this time with the New York Yankees. Ponson was cut by the St. Louis Cardinals last week and the Yankees, desperate to find a fifth starter, expect to sign the talented-but-troubled pitcher on Friday.
The Mariners optioned outfielder Shin-Soo Choo to Triple-A Tacoma and outrighted catcher Luis Oliveros to Class A Inland Empire. Infielder Greg Dobbs and outfielder Adam Jones will be added to Seattle’s 25-man roster Friday.
The Indians activated outfielder Casey Blake from the 15-day DL on Thursday and optioned outfielder Franklin Gutierrez to Triple-A Buffalo. Blake was off to the best start of his career when he strained a muscle in his left side during batting practice. He was placed on the disabled list June 14 for the first time in his career.
The Texas Rangers recalled Freddy Guzman from Triple-A Oklahoma. He was sent down July 3 after spending two weeks with the Rangers.
The Reds announced LHP Chris Hammond cleared waivers and became a free agent on Wednesday.
Athletics slugger Frank Thomas has sued two White Sox doctors, claiming their misdiagnosis of his broken foot in 2004 led to further injury and his eventual departure from the team. Attorney Thomas Demetrio said the doctors misdiagnosed a fractured bone in Thomas’ left foot as a bruise and cleared him to continue playing, which led to a second broken bone in the foot last year. “They failed to diagnose and properly treat the injury,” Demetrio said. “He’s 280 pounds. He shouldn’t have been walking on that foot, let alone playing baseball.”
Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Odalis Perez, who surrendered the game-winning home run to the Cardinals’ Albert Pujols in the 14th inning on Thursday night, accused his team of treating him like “trash.” The left-hander is in the second year of a three-year, $24 million contract and in his fifth season with the Dodgers. He’s been banished to the bullpen except for one start since mid-May, has been used only twice since June 28 and is 4-4 with a 6.79 ERA. “I don’t know why I’m in this situation,” Perez said. “I’ve been here for the last five years and I’ve never been in a situation like this. If I’ve done something wrong, let me know, tell me. I want to know. I’ve been treated like trash.”
