Standings
The graphics next to each team are called “sparklines.” They depict each team’s performance over the last month. Each “up” bar is a victory and a “down” bar is a loss. There are horizontal lines for home games and gray bars represent games decided by two runs or less. “PWins” is short for Projected Wins, based on each team’s Run Differential, and is often a better measure of a team’s true strength.

Game of the Day
Rickie Weeks gave and took away yesterday as the Brewers beat the Reds, 6-5 in 13 innings. Weeks made a mental blunder in the top of the 13th when he allowed Juan Castro to score from second on a sacrifice bunt. But he redeemed himself with a bases-loaded single in the bottom of the 13th to plate the winning runs for the Brewers. It was the Brewers’ ninth walk-off victory of the season and 16th win in their last at-bat.
Adam Dunn had put the Reds ahead in the top of the tenth with a home run, but the Brewers’ Geoff Jenkins returned the favor in the bottom of the inning.

The Los Angeles Angels traded disappointing right-hander Jeff Weaver to the St. Louis Cardinals for minor league outfielder Terry Evans. Evans was drafted in the 47th round by St. Louis in 2001.
Before Wednesday’s game at Colorado, Barry Bonds’ personal trainer, Greg Anderson, was held in contempt of court and taken to prison for refusing to testify to a federal grand jury investigation that’s looking into Bonds for perjury. Bonds, who was 1-for-4, had no comment.
The Brewers designated backup catcher Chad Moeller for assignment and sent starting pitcher Carlos Villanueva to Class AAA Nashville. To take their roster spots, the Brewers recalled left-hander Dana Eveland and will purchase the contract of catcher Mike Rivera.
The Mets recorded all their runs and all four of their hits in the first inning of a 5-0 victory over the Pirates. Over the last 40 years, only one other team scored as many as five runs in a game in which it didn’t get a hit after the first inning: the A’s in an 8-4 win over the Blue Jays in 1994. (Source: Elias)
Florida’s Yusmeiro Petit (1-1) got the win in his first major league start even though he allowed four runs in the first inning on Wednesday at Washington. Petit gave up hits to the first five batters he faced, then settled down to last six innings with only one more run. According to Elias, only one other pitcher in the last 75 years won his first MLB start after yielding four or more runs in the first inning, and that was in 1961 (Howie Koplitz of the Tigers).
Chuck James won his third straight start, the first Braves’ rookie to do that since Rick Behenna 26 years ago, and Atlanta matched its season high for runs in beating St. Louis 14-4.
Craig Biggio has 630 doubles, ninth on the all-time list and 10 behind Honus Wagner. He has four straight multi-hit games and 22 this season after going 3-for-5 on Wednesday against the Cubs.
Speedy Carl Crawford put on a dazzling offensive show, leading the Tampa Bay Devil Rays to a 5-2 victory over Boston, their third straight over the Red Sox. Crawford singled twice, drove in two runs and stole three bases — including home in the fourth inning — to became the eighth player in major league history with 200 steals before age 25.
Mike Mussina (10-3) showed no ill effects from a slight groin pull in a win over Cleveland on Wednesday. Mussina allowed three runs and five hits in six sharp innings. According to Elias Sports Bureau, the right-hander is the only pitcher in AL history to win at least 10 games in 15 consecutive seasons.
Jake Peavy pitched seven strong innings and hit his first career homer Wednesday for the Padres.
Seattle Mariners starting center fielder Jeremy Reed will undergo surgery on Thursday to repair his broken right thumb and will be out for eight weeks, the team said. Reed was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Monday after injuring himself while diving for a ball in a game on Sunday. He saw a hand specialist, Dr. Carlton Keck, of Seattle on Wednesday and Keck recommended the surgery. Keck will perform the operation in which a plate will be placed in Reed’s injured thumb.
The Yankees purchased the contract of right-hander Kris Wilson from the Triple-A Columbus. Wilson gives New York 13 pitchers and Torre another option in his well-worn bullpen.
In need of outfielders, the New York Yankees claimed veteran Aaron Guiel off waivers from the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday and sent Kevin Reese to Triple-A Columbus. Reese is headed back to the minors following his second stint with New York. He batted .417 (5-for-12) with one RBI in 10 games. The Yankees have released non-roster DH Erubiel Durazo.
Chris Reitsma learned he will need season-ending surgery on Wednesday. Reitsma has sought a second opinion with Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham on July 17, Porter said. Porter said Andrews will help determine if Reitsma needs Tommy John surgery, which would keep the right-hander out for a year, or an ulnar nerve transposition procedure, which would keep him out about six months. “He’s going to have surgery, for sure, season-ending surgery,” Porter said. “But at this point we don’t know exactly what he’s going to have yet. There’s still some question marks.”
Third baseman Chipper Jones returned to the Atlanta Braves lineup on Wednesday. Jones and the team’s medical staff were encouraged after his visit Wednesday with Dr. John Gleason, an Atlanta foot specialist who also worked with the third baseman last season. Earlier reads of Jones’ MRI showed he had a partial tear of the plantar plate of his right second toe and an inflamed ligament. Gleason found inflammation but no tear, according to trainer Jeff Porter. Jones reported less pain in his right foot. He said he knows he will have to deal with chronic pain in his feet through his career, but he was encouraged that the current injury is less serious than one to his left foot which kept him out 37 games last season. Jones said he even flew to Japan in the offseason to have his baseball shoes custom made, but he still has sore feet. “I’ve done everything, I’ve just got some bad feet,” Jones said. “I’m going to have to deal with it.”
The White Sox announced non-roster RHP Nate Cornejo has retired.
Tampa Bay catcher Dioner Navarro was not in the lineup for Wednesday night’s game against the Boston Red Sox after escaping serious injury when his sport utility vehicle flipped twice in a traffic accident.
Phil Hughes drew a crowd of scouts again Monday for Double-A Trenton (Double-A). The Rangers and Nationals were among the teams in attendance, according to the New York Post. Hughes, 20, is limited to about 80 pitches right now. Monday he left after 4 2/3 shutout innings. “If he could get his curveball over consistently he could pitch in the big leagues right now,” a scout told the paper.
Texas Rangers right-hander Kevin Millwood won’t make Friday night’s scheduled start against the Minnesota Twins because of concern over the strained biceps in his pitching arm. Rangers manager Buck Showalter said John Wasdin will start in Kevin Millwood’s place Friday vs. the Twins.
The San Diego Padres activated outfielder Dave Roberts from the disabled list before Wednesday night’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies. Outfielder Ben Johnson was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a left shoulder strain.
A’s DH Frank Thomas, who drew his 1,500th and 1,501st walks Tuesday, walked again Wednesday. He now needs five more to tie Mike Schmidt for 15th on the all-time and six more to tie Lou Gehrig for 14th.
The Mets are debating whether to use Darren Oliver, Jose Lima or Mike Pelfrey for Friday night’s game or perhaps in Saturday’s doubleheader if Pedro Martinez (hip) is unable to go. Manager Willie Randolph and GM Omar Minaya told the New York Post that Double-A phenom Mike Pelfrey won’t be in the equation unless Lima or Oliver are needed in relief before Friday. “Our goal is to develop him the best we can in the minor leagues. If we’re forced to bring him up, we’ll consider it,” Minaya told the paper.
The Nationals plan to purchase the contract of LHP Micah Bowie from Triple-A New Orleans on Thursday. Bowie last pitched in the majors in 2003 for Oakland. To make room for Bowie, the team will transfer RHP Felix Rodriguez (right shoulder tendinitis) from the 15-day to the 60-day DL.
THT Stats
PrOPS stands for “Predicted OPS” and was invented by J.C. Bradbury to estimate which batters have outperformed or underperformed their fundamental stats the most. PrOPS uses batted ball info (line drives and groundballs), walks, home runs, strikeouts and HBP’s to establish an expected (or projected) OPS than you can compare to a batter’s actual performance.
Following is a list to the 20 batters who have most outperformed their PrOPS, and can be expectd to come back down to earth in the second half of the season. No surprise, the list is led by the Twins’ Joe Mauer. Mauer has had a great half-season but isn’t very likely to bat .391 in the second half.
