Game of the Day
Josh Willingham hit a pinch-hit two-run home run off Billy Wagner in the bottom of the ninth to give the Marlins a 6-5 win over the Mets. Willingham has four home runs in his last 10 at bats. Earlier in the game, Hanley Ramirez hit a two-run homer for the Marlins.
The game started with a couple of rookies on the mound. Marlins starter Scott Olsen struck out 10 but allowed four runs in six innings and Mets starter Mike Pelfrey allowed seven hits and four runs in six innings. For the Mets, Jose Reyes hit a triple and home run and Carlos Beltran hit a double and homer.

Carlos Guillen hit for the cycle in Tuesday’s game at Tampa Bay. He is the 10th Detroit player, and third since 1951, to complete the cycle. He had an RBI triple in the second, a solo homer in the third, a single in the sixth and a double in the eighth. Guillen hit his double to right center and slide safely into second, beating a throw from Damon Hollins. “Inside I felt pretty good,” Guillen said. “I was looking for the double. As soon as I hit the ball, I tried to run hard. If I don’t run my hard my first at-bat, I don’t get the triple. If I don’t run hard my last at-bat, I don’t get the double.”
Sean Casey hit a home run in his third at-bat as a Tiger. He hadn’t hit a home run in his previous 173 at-bats.
Chase Utley extended his hit streak to 33 games with a first-inning single off of Jeff Suppan in Tuesday’s game at St. Louis.
There have been only 21 runs scored in the last five games played at Coors Field. That’s the fewest runs scored by both teams combined, by far, over any five home-game span in the history of the Rockies. The previous low was 30 runs scored over five games, done earlier this season. The scores during these five games: 3-1, 4-2, 3-1, 4-2, 1-0.
Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek will have surgery for torn cartilage in his left knee. Manager Terry Francona said he hoped the surgery would be Thursday but he gave no information on when Varitek might return. It figures to be at least four weeks. “He was examined (Tuesday) morning and they found, I guess, a partial tear in the meniscus,” Francona said. “We’ll know, certainly, a lot more on the timetable after they go in and get him cleaned up.” Doug Mirabelli, mostly, and Ken Huckaby, partially, will handle the Red Sox’s catching duties for August.
Mets right-hander Duaner Sanchez underwent shoulder surgery on his pitching arm Tuesday and will miss the rest of the season. The reliever was riding in a cab that got into an accident near the team’s hotel in Florida on Sunday night and flew back to New York on Monday, the team said. The Mets hoped Sanchez wouldn’t need surgery to repair his severely separated right shoulder and he would be able to return to the mound in September. But the decision to operate was made Tuesday, thus ending his season.
The St. Paul Pioneer Press reports Francisco Liriano has been scratched from his scheduled start on Wednesday against the Rangers due to pain near his left elbow. The team said he was being scratched as a precautionary measure after he experienced discomfort while throwing in a bullpen session between starts. “It’s nothing to be alarmed about,” pitching coach Rick Anderson said. “It’s just that he’s a young kid with a bright future, and you don’t want to mess with it.”
The Washington Nationals placed Robert Fick on the 15-day disabled list due to a left rib cartilage separation.
Chris Sampson was optioned to Triple-A Round Rock on Tuesday.
Houston’s Morgan Ensberg (shoulder) was activated from the 15-day disabled list on Tuesday. He was -2-for-4 with a double and a run scored at San Diego.
Eric Young was released by the San Diego Padres on Tuesday to make room for Ben Johnson and newly-acquired Todd Walker. Terrmel Sledge was optioned to Triple-A Portland.
The Baltimore Orioles recalled Abreu from Triple-A Ottawa and optioned Eddy Rodriguez to take his spot in the minors.
Scott Feldman was recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma and John Rheinecker was optioned out.
Matt Guerrier (fractured right thumb) was activated from the 15-day disabled list after Tuesday’s game.
Terry Tiffee was optioned to Triple-A Rochester after Tuesday’s game against the Rangers.
Boof Bonser was recalled from Triple-A Rochester, replacing Scott Baker on the active roster. He will start Wednesday’s game against the Rangers in place of Francisco Liriano, who is sidelined due to a sore left elbow.
Hee Seop Choi was designated for assignment on Tuesday, as the Boston Red Sox made a few moves to make room due to the Jason Varitek (knee) injury.
The Angels optioned RHP Greg Jones to Triple-A Salt Lake and recalled LHP Joe Saunders.
The Cubs selected RHP Juan Mateo from Double-A West Tenn for the 40-man roster.
The Yankees optioned RHP Colter Bean to Triple-A Columbus of the IL. He had been designated for assignment.
The Rangers have designated RHP John Wasdin for assignment. They have 10 days to trade, release or outright him to the minor leagues.
The Dodgers designated OF Jose Cruz Jr. for assignment Tuesday to make room for their trade deadline acquisitions. Los Angeles needed room on its roster for infielder Julio Lugo, who was acquired Monday from Tampa Bay for two minor-leaguers.
Because of the four trades Monday, the Pirates recalled outfielder Chris Duffy and reliever Josh Sharpless from Triple-A Indianapolis to fill out their 25-man roster. Duffy began the season as the Pirates’ starting center fielder, but initially refused a minor league demotion in mid-May before finally accepting it a month later.
The Red Sox optioned Jermaine Van Buren to Triple-A Pawtucket on Monday. He was 1-0 with a 10.80 ERA in nine relief appearances with Boston.
The Reds optioned LHP Brian Shackelford to Triple-A Louisville of the IL and sent OF Dewayne Wise outright there, too. Wise had been designated for assignment.
GM Dave Dombrowski said the Tigers were never close to making a major deal, saying talks with Washington over Alfonso Soriano fell apart over Detroit’s best prospect, outfielder Cameron Maybin. “We inquired about Soriano, but it was one that never went anywhere,” he said. “They asked for Cameron Maybin to be part of packages of players. I said I wouldn’t trade Cameron Maybin straight up for Alfonso Soriano, so we were never close.”
Javy Lopez wants out of Baltimore. He was displaced as the starting catcher by Ramon Hernandez at spring training and recently lost his job as DH to Jay Gibbons, which means won’t be getting much playing time in the foreseeable future. “I’ve got no position on this team. I don’t see why they really need me,” Lopez said. “I’m not meant to play once a week. … I cannot be happy in this situation. They probably have their plan, and I don’t think they’re going to keep me like this until the end of the season. They’re probably going to do something sooner or later.”
