The graphics next to each team are called “sparklines.” They depict each team’s performance over the last month. Each “up” bar is a victory and a “down” bar is a loss. There are horizontal lines for home games and gray bars represent games decided by two runs or less. Other team graphs and stats can be found on our Team Page.

Player News

Derrek Lee will rehab at AAA Iowa this weekend before returning to the Cubs. Cards manager Tony La Russa said he expects Albert Pujols to begin playing Monday, if not sooner.

Kerry Wood fears that he may be done for the year.

The Indians traded pitcher Jason Johnson to the Red Sox for future considerations (player or cash). The Sox also optioned Kyle Snyder to AAA.

The Devil Rays designated 3B Sean Burroughs for assignment. They also placed RHP Ruddy Lugo on the 15-day disabled list and recalled LHP Jon Switzer from AAA. HOU purchased the contract of RHP Roger Clemens from AAA Round Rock and optioned Chris Sampson to AAA.

The Diamondbacks placed LHP Terry Mulholland and RHP Russ Ortiz on unconditional waivers. OF Scott Hairston was placed on the 15-day DL with a right shoulder injury and RHP Casey Daigle was recalled from Triple-A Tucson.

A Hardball Times Update
Goodbye for now.

The Royals designated OF Kerry Robinson for assignment and added OF Joey Gathright to the 25-man roster. Also, RHP Zack Greinke was reinstated from the 60-day disabled list and optioned to Double-A Wichita and they assigned 2B Fernando Cortez to Triple-A Omaha.

SF INF Kevin Frandsen was recalled from Triple-A Fresno. Florida activated C Josh Willingham from the 15-day DL and optioned Chris Aguila to Triple-A Albuquerque. Toronto sent RHP Francisco Rosario to Triple-A Syracuse to clear a roster spot for RHP A.J. Burnett for Thursday’s game.

Rehab news: Phillies LHP Randy Wolf allowed six runs and six hits in 3 2-3 innings in a rehab start at Double-A Reading. Wolf had elbow surgery last July 1. OAK’s Justin Duchscherer (elbow) pitched a scoreless seventh inning in his second and final rehab appearance at Triple-A Sacramento. The San Diego Padres will be sending pitchers Woody Williams and Doug Brocail to rehab with the Lake Elsinore Storm,.

STL CF Jim Edmonds suffered a mild concussion in the third inning after crashing into the wall trying to catch a home run. He is day-to-day.

The Pirates signed first-round draft pick Brad Lincoln, the overall fourth pick in the draft.

CLE’s Edward Mujica came in and gave up a two-run double, but then pitched scoreless ball for 2.2 innings. He has yet to give up an earned run in 41.1 innings at three levels this season.

TB’s Rocco Baldelli, who missed all of 2005 and the first two months of this season, is hitting .388 with two HR in 13 games since coming off the disabled list.

LAA’s Orlando Cabrera reached base for the 50th straight game. Joey Gathright was 2 for 3 in his Kansas City debut. SEA’s Ichiro’s hitting streak is now up to 20 games. HOU SS Adam Everett is 11 for 22 in last six games with an .821 OPS for June.

According to Elias, Erik Bedard is the first pitcher to win consecutive starts against teams that were on winning streaks of at least eight games since 1918, when Pittsburgh’s Earl Hamilton did it against the Giants and Cubs. Bedard beat the Marlins yesterday and snapped an eight-game winning streak by the Mets in his previous start.

The White Sox have scored at least eight runs in six straight games, a franchise record. 1B Paul Konerko has hit safely in seven straight games and is batting .519 in that span.

Before Oakland scored in the fourth, Colorado pitchers had pitched 25.1 consecutive scoreless innings, a franchise record.

THT’s Stats

Groundball pitchers are a special breed. They give up less home runs and, if backed by a strong infield, can be the ace of your staff. Groundball pitching isn’t a guarantee of success, however. For instance, recently traded Jason Johnson is sixth on this list of the most prolific groundball pitchers in the majors (a total of 25 pitchers with 49% groundball rate or higher; the major league average is 43%).

GB% refers to percent of batted balls that are groundballs. I’ve also included each pitcher’s ERA for comparison.
