Win Shares have been updated. Vlad and Mora are starting to separate themselves from the American League pack, while Bonds and Casey continue to lead the NL. Here is a list of total WSAA by position in the NL. Pitchers aren’t listed because their total WSAA, by definition, equals zero. C -17 1B 12 2B […]
Wichita State sophomore ace Mike Pelfrey pitched a gem today in the first game of the NCAA Regionals, beating Missouri 3-0. He pitched 8.2 shutout innings, struck out 14, and allowed just 4 hits. The win runs Pelfrey’s 2004 record to 11-2, with a 2.18 ERA, 125 strikeouts, and 24 walks in 115.1 innings. Postscript: […]
Aaron mentioned in his last post that Prior’s first start was today. Let’s just say that things went very well for Prior, who only allowed two hits and no walks in six innings. He struck out eight in 85 pitches, and was perfect against the first thirteen batters he faced. Mark’s fastball was between 93-95, […]
Mark Prior is making his 2004 debut in about 20 minutes and the game is on WGN. Nothing better than a little Friday afternoon baseball with one of the best pitchers in baseball showing us if he’s ready to return from injury or not. My prediction: 5 IP, 2 ER, 6 SO. I’ll be watching […]
The American League and National League stats have been updated for all players. Win Shares will be updated this weekend. We track ERA and FIP for each pitcher, and it’s insightful to calculate the difference between the two. There are a number of things that can cause ERA and FIP to vary: the pitcher may […]
Following in the footsteps of Craig Burley, I’ve developed a beta-version of college pitcher rankings. More details are to be found at Batter’s Box, as well as a list of top 50 starters and top 20 Relievers in 2004. Our co-editor Matthew Namee will be pleased to see Wichita State hurler Tommy Hottovy topping the […]
I’ve updated all the graphs, and there are some neat things to point out: – The Expos are so bad, I’ve done something I don’t like to do: I’ve inserted a break in the axis of the National League graph. It’s the only way you can see how the rest of the teams line up. […]
Bucky Jacobsen, the 28-year-old Triple-A DH/1B in the Mariners organization, had his third multi-homer game of the season yesterday. He’s now hitting .314/.400/.645 with 17 2B, 13 HR, and 49 RBI in 44 games. Meanwhile, big-league DH Edgar Martinez is hitting just .253/.333/.397, and 1B John Olerud is at .267/.382/.360. Outside of pinch-hitter Dave Hansen, […]
Well, my boy Henri Stanley has yet to start hitting for Pawtucket. He’s proven he can hit, but since joining the Red Sox organization, Stanley has batted just .205/.239/.295 in 44 AB. While we’re on the subject of my favorite players, Padres manager Bruce Bochy has given Jon Knott only three at-bats so far. Knott […]
If you’re interested in the draft, you owe it to yourself to waste a pile of time over at mlb.com, which has the best draft information available without a subscription. Their Draft Tracker is an incredible resource; it has capsule scouting reports on hundreds of players from MLB’s centrally-based scouts (the page I linked to […]
