I am watching the White Sox/A’s game and shortly after Jermaine Dye’s solo homer off Mark Buehrle, Hawk Harrelson went into this incredibly long speech about how Oakland’s ballpark is a “bandbox.” Seriously, he used the word bandbox a minimum of 20 times in about two minutes. He also went on to say that the […]
In a match of division leaders, the red-hot Reds finished a three-game sweep of the Marlins, who had just swept the Mets in a previous series. The Reds won all three of their games by two runs — 9-7, 7-6 and 3-1. They are now 12-1 in two-run games.

Wichita State came out of the loser’s bracket to win the MVC tournament, beating Southern Illinois twice Saturday. The win puts the Shockers in a good position to be awarded an NCAA regional (sites and brackets will be announced today on ESPN). WSU’s Drew Moffitt, who had 3 homers and 10 RBI on Friday, plus […]
In my column on Thursday, one of the guys I talked about was Jon Knott, an outfielder in the Padres system. Well, yesterday the Padres promoted Knott to the big-league club. I’m a Dodgers fan, so Knott’s success could hurt my team’s playoff chances, but I’m still rooting hard for him. Keep an eye on […]
Wichita State slugger Drew Moffitt had the game of a lifetime today, with 3 home runs and a school-record 10 RBI. The Shockers beat Southwest Missouri State 15-1, and they’ll face Southern Illinois tomorrow for the MVC tournament championship. WSU probably needs to win the tournament to be awarded a regional in the NCAA tourney. […]
Good pitching matchup tonight: Tom Glavine vs. Dontrelle Willis in Florida. Willis has cooled since his sizzling start, but the veteran Glavine is coming off a near-perfect game against the Rockies. Tom Glavine has built a successful career on an unusual talent: pitching in the clutch. For instance, in the four years from 1999 to […]
All stats and graphs have been updated through yesterday’s games. I’ll get to Win Shares later this weekend. We’ve added something new to the batting stats: Groundball/Flyball ratios for individual batters. We explored the nature of groundballs, flyballs and line drives a couple of weeks ago, and now we’re reporting it for you. The most […]
On Wednesday, Wichita State’s Mike Pelfrey had his worst start in recent memory, giving up six runs in a loss to Evansville. That was in the first round of the double-elimination Missouri Valley Conference tournament — a tourney the Shockers need to win if they want to host an NCAA regional. Yesterday, Tommy Hottovy took […]
The KC Star’s Joe Posnanski was quite possibly the most optimistic person in the world when it came to the Royals’ chances this spring. Hell, he got me fired up about the R’s, and I predicted them to win the AL Central. Of course, two months later that pick looks pretty dumb. Kansas City’s got […]
