According to FOXSports.com’s Ken Rosenthal, Toronto players are “fed up” with manager Cito Gaston and do not want him to return next season.
“It’s nearly a mutiny right now,” an unnamed source told Rosenthal. “He has lost the entire team.” The Blue Jays faded this season, going 39-69 after a surprising 27-14 start, and it may have had something to do with turmoil in the clubhouse. Gaston is currently signed through 2010, but things can change quickly if enough players call for his head.
Aaron Cook pitched eight innings of one-run ball as the Rockies beat the Brewers 9-2 on Thursday to clinch the NL wild card.
It is nice to have that wild card wrapped up, but even more encouraging was Cook’s performance in his second start back from a shoulder strain. He’s allowed just the one run and one walk in 13 innings since coming back, so he’s all set to be a part of the NLDS rotation. He ends the year 11-6 with a 4.16 ERA in 27 starts.
According to the San Francisco Chronicle, manager Bruce Bochy and GM Brian Sabean will both be brought back for the 2010 season.
There’s no reason their jobs should have been on the line in the first place. Despite a dismal offense, the Giants have posted an 86-73 record this season and were in the hunt for a playoff spot until just a few days ago. They’ve drafted well as an organization and boast some of the top young arms in baseball.
Tim Wakefield said Thursday he is feeling the ‘physical toll’ of his Wednesday start.
Wake couldn’t last longer than three innings, being blasted for five runs. The knuckleballer simply can’t move well enough to pitch, never mind field. The 42-year old said that if he doesn’t make the postseason roster, he will immediately have surgery to repair his herniated disc. Wake, a first-time All-Star whose 11 victories at the break were among the league leaders, likely ends his 2009 year with a 11-5 tally and a 4.58 ERA in 129 2/3 innings.

Standings
The graphics next to each team are called “sparklines.” They depict each team’s performance over the last month. Each “up” bar is a victory and a “down” bar is a loss. There are horizontal lines for home games and red bars represent games decided by two runs or less. “PWins” is short for Projected Wins, based on each team’s Run Differential, and is often a better measure of a team’s true strength. Other team graphs and stats can be found on our Team Page.
