Archive for August 2009

Warning: Back-of-napkin math will be used. Joel Pineiro is having a phenomenal year, due mostly in part to his Roy Halladay impersonation. He doesn’t walk anyone and gets a bunch of groundballs. Here are his 2009 numbers: 3.03 FIP, 3.31 tRA, 61.1 GB%, 1.00 BB/9 Impressive, I know. His ground ball percentage is absurd. He’s […]

The Red Sox called up right-handed pitching prospect Michael Bowden to make his second appearance of the season last night. Bowden labored through two innings throwing 63 pitches while giving up seven runs on eight hits and three walks. He failed to strike out a batter and served up a home run to the first […]

Bengie Molina today said that he is hoping for a two-year extension from the San Francisco Giants. Of course, the problem is that the Giants have top catching prospect Buster Posey waiting for his shot in the minor leagues. 35 years old, Molina is on pace to catch 1,155 innings, which would be a career […]

I know it’s easy to pick on the Mets right now, but I wanted to point out a small transaction the Mets made earlier in the year that has come back to bite them. In this year’s Rule V draft, the Mets made a steal of a pick by nabbing 26 year-old submarine righty reliever […]

Here is a thoughtful read by Brian Joseph of Baseball Digest Daily. Brian’s top 5 among full-timers: Yadier Molina, Ryan Hanigan, Gerald Laird, Omir Santos, and Ramon Hernandez. His bottom 5: Jason Varitek, Josh Bard, Nick Hundley, Jorge Posada, and (last) Mike Napoli.

A couple minutes ago I just posted a THT Live blog thingee on the last player on each team to get 200 hits in a season. Last place was – by far – the Cincinnati Reds. They’ve completed 31 straight seasons without such a deed. No other teams has gone longer than 17 such seasons. […]

This is similar to what I did for 20-win pitchers yesterday: a list of the last time a player on any team collected 200 hits in a season. First, some fun questions: before checking the list can you guess: – The only team who has never had a 200-hit performance by anyone on its roster? […]

Last night, I presented a list of the most recent 20-game winners for all MLB teams. That got me thinking: what are the longest droughts of all-time for a franchise to go wihtout someone winning 20 games? Having checked, here are the ten longest stretches ever: 33 years: 1975-2007 Indians 32 years: 1918-1949 Phillies 30 […]

Livan Hernandez, 34, who somehow won the No. 5 starting pitcher role for the New York Mets in spring training, has been designated for assignment. The Mets have 10 days to waive, release or trade Hernandez in favor of returning left-handed reliever Billy Wagner. The release shouldn’t come as a surprise at all.
