Around the Majors: Redsox-Mets trade

1) The Redsox traded 1B Doug Mientkiewicz to the Mets for 1B Ian Bladergroen.

After 5 RCAA/.756 OPS and 23 RCAA/.843 OPS seasons, Mientkiewicz had a .350 SLG, .326 OBA, .676 OPS, -19 RCAA in 127 games with the Twins and Redsox. He has a .768 career OPS, compared to his league average of .768, and 6 RCAA in 692 games.

Mientkiewicz ranks 2nd in AL history for worst SLG vs. the league average, among 1B (min: 2500 PA)–

2) According to the Washington Post, the Orioles are considering going after Sammy Sosa.

3) The Mets are reportedly interested in free agent RF Magglio Ordonez.

4) According to the Seattle Times, the Mariners may be interested in Mets OF Mike Cameron.

5) The Indians signed OF Darnell McDonald to a minor league contract, with an invitation to spring training.

McDonald had a .188 SLG, .206 OBA, .393 OPS, -4 RCAA in 17 games with the Orioles.

6) The Pirates signed free agent P Rick White to a minor league contract, with an invitation to spring training.

After 4.31 ERA/2 RSAA and 5.78 ERA/-9 RSAA seasons, White had a 5.29 ERA/-6 RSAA in 59 games with the Indians. He has a 4.30 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.53, and 21 RSAA in 449 games.

7) The Mariners signed Cuban SS Yuniesky Betancourt to a 4 year, $3.65 million contract, added him to the 40 man roster and designated P A
Aaron Looper for assignment.

Although Betancourt was invited to spring training, he is expected to start at AA.

Looper had a 5.14 ERA/-1 RSAA in 6 games in 2003.
