Standings

The graphics next to each team are called “sparklines.” They depict each team’s performance over the last month. Each “up” bar is a victory and a “down” bar is a loss. There are horizontal lines for home games and red bars represent games decided by two runs or less. “PWins” is short for Projected Wins, based on each team’s Run Differential, and is often a better measure of a team’s true strength. Other team graphs and stats can be found on our Team Page.

Games of the Day

Houston and Philadelphia are two NL teams fighting for a spot in the playoffs, and last night each won in extra innings on the road to keep their hopes alive. Jimmy Rollins hit a two-run triple in the top of the 14th to push the Phillies past the Nationals, 8-7 (SF by Church in bottom of the 14th not enough for Washington), and Brad Ausmus plates the winning run for Houston in the top of the 15th against the Pirates. Having won eight straight, the Astros are now 1.5 games behind the Cardinals in the NL Central, while the Phillies are one game back in the Wild Card race (Astros are four games back in this race). Here are both of the box scores and WPA graphs for the extra-inning affairs:

Yesterday’s Home Runs

The following stats are provided by Hit Tracker, which logs the projected distance of each home run (if it were to land uninterrupted at field level) and its “standard” distance, which is corrected for weather conditions. You can read their daily updates at the Hit Tracker Blog.

On Sunday, Sept. 24, 2006, San Diego’s Trevor Hoffman picked up his 479th career save in a 2-1 Padres win over the visiting Pirates at PETCO Park – congratulations to Hoffman on a Hall of Fame career!
Hoffman’s milestone save was not the only excitement at PETCO that day, however, as the 41,932 fans in attendance can also say that they witnessed the longest home run in the history of PETCO Park, and the longest home run in the major leagues in 2006.

In the bottom of the 4th inning, Padres’ slugger Russell Branyan turned around a 93 mph fastball from Pittsburgh’s Marty McLeary and sent it screaming on a line to right center field; riding an 11 mph breeze blowing out to right field, Branyan’s blast struck high off the concrete wall behind the three palm trees to the right of the center field bleachers. If the ball had been able to fly unobstructed all the way back to field level, it would have carried an amazing 502 feet, making it by far the longest home run in PETCO Park history, and easing its way past Matt Holliday’s Sept. 19 homer at Coors Field to become the longest MLB homer of 2006.

Many thanks to Geoff Young, who maintains a fantastic Padres blog at Ducksnorts, for assisting in identifying the impact point for Branyan’s blast, I couldn’t have done it without you, Geoff! It’s nice to know that someone else besides me can be talked into watching the same home run video 25 or 30 times in a row with their face 6 inches from the screen.
